"Away from chips and sodas", experts raise the alarm: 60% of Albanians

Albania is increasingly facing the problem of overweight and obesity, a phenomenon that is affecting both adults and children. According to Public Health experts, about 60% of Albanians are overweight, while 1 in 10 children is obese.

The data was released on World Obesity Day, with experts raising concerns about the continued increase in this phenomenon in the country. According to them, childhood obesity has doubled over the last decade.

Experts point out that among the main factors influencing this situation are the decrease in breastfeeding by mothers in the first years of life, as well as the subsequent malnutrition of children. High consumption of processed foods, chips and carbonated drinks is considered one of the main causes of weight gain.

"Give up on chips, sodas, and processed foods! Children and adults, bring food from home!" they tell "A2 CNN".

In this context, specialists call for a change in lifestyle, recommending avoiding unhealthy foods and preparing meals at home, for both children and adults.

Being overweight is associated with a higher risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other serious health problems. Globally, about 1.7 million people die prematurely each year due to complications related to obesity.

Meanwhile, in early 2026, the United States changed the food pyramid, focusing on natural products and healthy nutrition. Experts emphasize that a balanced diet and regular physical activity remain the main factors for preventing and reducing obesity.
