Eva Buzo managed to become the first female athlete to swim across the Otranto canal.
The Albanian-Australian completed her challenge by swimming 90 km from the shores of Lecce in Italy, to the Karaburuni peninsula in 35 hours and 17 minutes.
The challenge started in the afternoon of August 17, 2024 from the rocks of San Foca, near Lecce, and ended around 05:00 in the morning of August 19, when it touched Albanian land near Cape Gjuza, in one of the bays of Karaburun.
After completing the challenge, Eva confessed the emotions and difficulties she faced along the way.
- Eva, how do you feel about this achievement?
Eva Buzo: At the moment I'm feeling a lot of emotions and I'm certainly tired. I feel very proud that I made it because it was something I knew I could do and that's why it took me so many years to get here.
- This is the second time you try it and what was your goal to achieve this?
Eva Buzo: I think that I have developed a lot as an athlete in recent years and I always knew that it was something to be done regardless of how long it might take. I have always wanted to do something for Albania, for my country, and the cooperation with an Albanian team on the boat that accompanied me was something special and gives us the satisfaction of realizing it as a group together.
- Did you encounter any problems during your trip?
Eva Buzo: Many different things, when I got out of the water I was very pale and I was showing this to my grandchildren in the morning. It's a gradual decline and you can't tell when you're in the water. The biggest problem is the sun's rays and sunburn and the body gradually gets tired. One arm is more tired than the other or vice versa but you have to be focused and think as if you are somewhere else and you are relaxing so that you don't feel too tired.
When we were getting to the end I felt really scared because my brain was playing games with me and I was seeing different things and in the end I just had to touch the stones. It was so dark and I couldn't see them because I was hallucinating. I was seeing scary things and the team was telling me to just swim because I was at the bottom. I managed to make it one way or another.
- Do you have a piece of advice for young people in Albania, Australia and around the world?
Eva Buzo: It is very difficult to say, but this was my idea and adventure and it is my responsibility to fulfill it. No one would do this for me, so I had to do it myself. Everyone has dreams and visions and it's all up to you to make the choices and believe in yourself to make what you want come true.
