Deportees from Italy will be accommodated in Gjadra, opposition against:

The opposition in Italy considers illegal the decree of the Meloni Government to turn the migrant center in Gjadra into an accommodation center for migrants who are detained in Italy, after their asylum application has been rejected. Meloni's decree even stipulates that this category of migrants can stay in Albania for up to 18 months before being repatriated to their countries of origin, passing through Italy again.

Italian opposition leader Elly Schlein criticized the plan, saying: "the Rama-Meloni protocol allows only a small part of Albanian centers to be used as CPR, so their conversion would still require reviewing the agreement with Albania and changing the law."

"To claim that this conversion would not have additional costs is ridiculous," she said.

The Italian government decided to turn migrant centers into return centers, an option that could become viable once Commissioner Magnus Brunner's plan comes into effect.

Although operational since October, migrant reception centers in Shëngjin and Gjadra, Albania, have remained empty due to ongoing legal disputes. The centers are awaiting a ruling from the European Court of Justice - expected by the end of May - after the Rome Tribunal referred the case to determine which countries can be classified as "safe" for returning migrants.

To overcome this impasse before the decision, the Italian government is considering repurposing the facilities at the Permanent Repatriation Centers (CPR). Instead of housing migrants intercepted in international waters, as originally planned, the centers will be used to detain irregular migrants already in Italy who have been scheduled for deportation.

After months of speculation, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi confirmed part of the plan in an interview with La Stampa on Monday.

“The Albanian centers can help strengthen the repatriation system for irregular migrants who do not have the right to stay in Italy,” he said, adding that they could be converted into CPRs because they are already equipped to handle deportations and that there would be no additional costs.

But according to the Italian opposition, this would require changing existing agreements with Albania. /Adapted from Pamphlet/
