Ilir Kulla, one of Fatos Nano's close associates, builds a detailed profile of the late former prime minister, who he says had no desire to enter history after having made it.
Mr. Kulla tells why Fatos Nano demystified himself, how he modernized the Albanian political system, and forgave the political opponent who imprisoned him.
" Fatos was one of those people who gave trust, delegated and always enjoyed having new people. He was a man who loved and enjoyed life and wanted things to move. A special person for the time we lived together. Fatos was premature for Albania in transition and in many things he was the first. Unfortunately, even with his departure from this life, he was the first at the level of our politicians. The more time passes, the more his figure will grow, also because those who have been left behind are the complete opposite of him ," Kulla said for "Top Channel".
This is Ilir Kulla's assessment of Fatos Nano, with whom he collaborated closely for a long period. Ilir Kulla calls Mr. Nano's passing sad.
" From a human point of view, I felt very sorry for him because he was still young to leave this world and he was a man who deserved to live a few more years of life because he had made sacrifices. Let's not forget that he was the only politician in this country who served four years in prison in conditions and circumstances like those of the early 90s, which were not easy in Albania ," said Kulla.
In this interview, Ilir Kulla brings some details since Nano's departure from active politics and how he spent his time away from what he perhaps knew how to do better, leaving his mark not only on the Socialist Party.
" Look, Fatos Nano was the man who demythologized himself with the sole purpose of living like a normal person. Everyone thought and thinks in politics how to mythologize themselves. His own history mythologized him. His goal was to demythologize himself and to be a free and simple man and to live his life as such a man. That's how he lived his life ," he says.
But what political legacy does Fatos Nano leave behind?
" His legacy is a very rich legacy. He is the man who modernized the political system in Albania. He liberalized the Albanian political mentality. He is a man who taught people not to hate politically and never to have the last word in politics. He is a man who knew how to forgive his opponent, which is not an easy thing in our conditions and when the opponent had not been gentle with him. On the contrary, he had been quite cruel with him because he was a man who looked to the future ," says Kulla.
Mr. Kulla stands out from Fatos Nano's long political career.
" If Albania gained NATO membership in 2008, it happened because Fatos Nano managed to make an agreement with his lifelong political opponent Sali Berisha to avoid the political crisis of 2007 when Bamir Topi was elected president.
So, if 9 months later Albania was in NATO, it was a great merit of Fatos Nano. Don't forget that Fatos Nano is the man who managed with extraordinary political rotation the process of transferring power in 2005 and it was Fatos Nano who in 1997 after an almost civil war in Albania when he took power did not retaliate to separate powers from each other, he modernized the political power of Albania , "said Kulla.
Ilir Kulla gives this comment on the former socialist prime minister's departure from politics while his political colleagues from the right are still active or in prison.
" Because Fatos Nano was not the president of the chess federation or any other sports or political federation that saw itself in eternity. Fatos Nano had no competition to enter history; he had made history. All those you mentioned today who do everything to stay out of politics are the exact opposite of Fatos Nano. He had that famous joke at the 2003 congress. He said: "I am Fatos Nano and then comes your history ," he said.
