The first meeting of the "Media and Justice" association is held, serious cases of the judicial system and journalism are identified...
Today, the first meeting of the "Media and Justice" association was held, where after the introduction of the members, the president and deputy president, its mission and main objectives were presented.
The "Media and Justice" Association aims to protect the interests of journalists and lawyers, protect the public interest, and guarantee the rights and interests of citizens, by promoting transparency, justice, and independence of the media and the legal system, and non-discriminatory treatment for lawyers.
According to representatives of the association, the High Inspector of Justice, Artur Metani, represents a clear failure of justice reform, arguing that the institution he leads has not fulfilled its mission to guarantee accountability and equal standards in the judicial system.
They claim that in some publicly denounced cases there has been inaction, delays in procedures and a lack of transparency in the handling of complaints. According to them, this situation has undermined public trust in the reform and internal control mechanisms of justice.
In this context, the association announced that a criminal complaint for inaction is expected to be filed very soon, emphasizing that their goal is to establish institutional responsibility and restore the full functionality of oversight mechanisms in the justice system.
During the meeting, several important decisions were proposed and approved. The first decision was to initiate procedures and prepare complaints and requests for the dismissal of Artur Metani as the head of the High Inspector of Justice. The members discussed concrete cases that, according to them, prove the dysfunction of this institution.
Proposals for legal amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code, regarding the profession of journalist, were also discussed. According to the participants, journalists should not be obliged to provide information that harms their sources and non-interference by the judicial power in the free exercise of the profession of journalism should be guaranteed.
Another issue addressed was the need for changes to the media law, particularly regarding the 20% VAT tax. Ideas were floated to recommend the abolition or relief of taxes on the media, arguing that this would help strengthen its independence and sustainability.
Also, the launch of official requests to judicial institutions regarding the manner of access of prosecutors to lawyers was discussed, raising concerns about double standards and the manner of decision-making in the justice system.
The meeting, which lasted more than two hours, addressed serious cases related to the functioning of the judicial system and the challenges of journalism. The association announced that concrete steps will be taken and other decisions will be made in the future in function of its mission.
