Journalist Mentor Kikia has commented on the violent clashes involving the premises around the Assembly during today's protest.
Invited to "Open", Kikia expressed his concern about the violent scenes and emphasized that they are contrary to the standards that the political culture in Albania should have.
" This is not the image we should show of our political culture. The right to protest is a basic right, but there is no need for so much violence, fire and the use of chairs ," said Kikia. He emphasized that the protest should be a normal and peaceful act in a democracy, without the need to use force to attract the attention of citizens.
Kikia called for violent scenes to be avoided, as they could backfire on the organizers and do more harm than good. He mentioned last year, when the opposition was involved in a wave of aggression against the parliament, which, according to him, led to a political stalemate.
" These images do not fit with what we should claim in terms of our political culture. The right to protest is, however, the most basic right. The protest does not need such gymnastics with fire and chairs. It should be the most normal thing in a democracy, there is no need to tell people that we are shaking the parliament for you to come to the protest on the 7th. Violent scenes can be avoided, to avoid later a boomerang that can to be produced. Last year the opposition was involved in that course of aggressiveness towards the parliament and there came a moment when it turned into a stalemate and DP supporters were wondering what they are doing. The majority was approving the laws without discussion or debate. The same thing will happen ", he said.
