Agron Shehaj, chairman of the Mundësia Party, says that there should be elections in the Municipality of Tirana, calling the fact that Veliaj continues to be mayor from a detention cell a scandal.
Invited to the show "The Unexposed" on MCN TV, Shehaj stated that the opposition should prepare for elections and that a joint candidate, and not from a political party, would create the premises for success in these elections.
Agron Shehaj : My proposal is simple, a non-political candidate is someone who does not come from the ranks of a political party. It is strange how the current mayor is in prison and has not been dismissed. It is very likely that we will have early elections for Tirana. Looking at the results of May 11, Rama is likely to replace one servant with another.
What can we do to prevent Rama from winning the elections again? We can elect a non-partisan candidate, in this sense I think that even Berisha is clear about what I mean. We can win the votes of the opposition parties, but also those who may not have voted for the opposition parties. This is a chance to remove Rama from the Municipality of Tirana, with an uncontroversial candidate, who contrasts with Edi Rama's candidates. They have asked me about the names, but I think that the profile is important and that it is not the candidate of a political party, including the DP. We saw that if we do not come up with a candidate who contrasts...
Ylli Rakipi : O Agron, he (Berisha) cannot control the "dependent", not the more independent you want...
Preç Zogaj : We don't know if there will be an election, because fish in the sea, frying pan in the fire... Veliaj has not been fired yet. The idea is new. It is an idea used in the world, it is to be taken into consideration, but there is a problem, because the opposition crisis is so great that it is beyond beautiful ideas...
Ylli Rakipi: What is your opinion about Alimehmet, Agron?
Agron Shehaj : I think running an important figure for mayor is a good idea, because it is the only opportunity we have to remove Rama's hands from the Municipality of Tirana.
Klodiana Lala: We are talking in a hypothetical situation because Veliaj is in office
Agron Shehaj: Do you agree that this is an anomaly? It would be a scandal. The decision to dismiss Veliaj is overdue, in no country in the world would it happen that when a mayor is in prison, he is kept there.
Klodiana Lala : The law is unclear on this point and the government is exploiting it.
Agron Shehaj : I'm talking politically. A mayor with such a strong shadow...
Klodiana Lala : Rama is using the law to stay in this situation. If Rama wants, he can fire him in a minute.
Mr. Shehaj, you have articulated an idea for a candidate who is apolitical and comes from civil society. Aren't you afraid that Rama might respond to you with a similar candidacy?
Agron Shehaj : We are accused of not being ready and leaving things to the last moment. I am making a proposal. I hope there will be elections as soon as possible. Then what Rama does… I say, no matter what, whoever Rama chooses, we have the opportunity to face Rama's candidate, with a candidate that we can all support.
Enton Abilekaj : There are two moments that could interest Rama. First, Rama, if the opposition enters the local by-elections, would be very interested in stopping the contestation of May 11. If the opposition enters the elections, May 11 is considered closed. Second, if there is a silent battle, Rama-Veliaj, the announcement of elections, would suit Rama to dismiss Veliaj as soon as possible. So Rama is interested in the proposal.
Agron Shehaj : It doesn't seem to me like Rama is in trouble, because he needs a reason to dismiss Veliaj, he has shown that he dismissed him within the day. He is in a situation where he has to justify why he hasn't dismissed him yet. Then, regarding the possibility of not participating in the elections, I think the biggest mistake was burning the mandates and not participating in the elections. Those who were partisans of these positions disappeared.
