"Durrës, crime scene", protest march in the city brought to its knees by floods
The government seems to be losing control of the situation. The floods of recent days have significantly increased discontent.
Thousands of families are under water, while Rama walks to summits and makes statuses on social networks. This has caused citizens to protest in Durrës today. This is the second citizen protest after the one in Vlora, where hundreds of residents shook the government due to the lack of water.
According to preliminary data, around 800 homes have been flooded in Durrës, while main roads have been blocked, causing traffic disruptions and major inconvenience to citizens. Protesters are demanding compensation for the damages caused, stressing that the situation is a consequence of mismanagement and abuse of funds, not just natural disasters.
Dozens of residents marched through the city streets, starting from the roundabout near the prison and continuing towards Durres Municipality. With chants such as “Durrës, crime scene” and “Declare a state of emergency,” they demanded immediate action from the authorities.
" In these 30 years, there has never been a flood of this magnitude in the city of Durrës. The beach, Shkozet, Spitalla, neighborhood 1 were flooded, but who was to blame for Veliera being flooded ?" said a citizen.
Also, an outraged citizen expressed criticism of the government and Prime Minister Edi Rama, saying that the entire people are against him.
" The tall one up there, do you see the people who are against it? He's drinking 33 thousand euros worth of wine, so don't drink it. Do you see these people here... May God take them and may God condemn them. Let the rights of these people be taken away ," he said.
The situation remains critical, especially in the Administrative Units of Sukth and Katund i Ri, where flooding has deepened due to the increase in the Erzen River. Civil emergencies have ordered the mandatory evacuation of residents. The area of former Kënetë, Shkozet and Spitalla is facing significant consequences from the floods of the last two days.
The cause of the floods is also suspected to be the blockage of drainage channels by inert materials, soil and urban waste, which instead of directing water towards the sea have become barriers. According to the opposition, the new hydropower plant built in 2022 in Porto Romano has not been operating at full capacity, increasing the risk to homes and businesses.
The opposition describes the situation as a "man-made disaster", raising allegations of over 30 million euros in corrupt investments. The complaint was filed by Ilirjana Kuçana from the Democratic Party of Albania (DP) with SPAK this Thursday.
On the third day of the floods, it is estimated that approximately 1,000 homes have been flooded, 335 businesses have been damaged, and over 350 residents have been evacuated, who are temporarily sheltering in the Convalescent Center. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and carry out emergency interventions to clean the canals and restore road traffic. /Pamphlet
