"Politics linked to crime cartels", Tomorri talks about money
Klodian Tomorri

Journalist Klodian Tomorri has stated that money laundering from criminal activities in Albania is a known and documented phenomenon by international institutions, while expressing skepticism about the possibility of direct intervention by the US or the European Union to change the government in the country.

Tomorri said that reports from the European Parliament, the European Union and the US Department of State have long highlighted the presence of drug money in the Albanian economy.

According to him, the connections of individuals involved in drug cartels with Albanian officials have also been made public.

"The Albanian government has proven to have connections with people who are part of these cartels and this is proven ," Tomorri said.

Tomorri stated that Washington and Brussels are aware of these developments, but so far have not taken steps to remove the Albanian government.

He argued that American policy under the presidency of Donald Trump is oriented towards pragmatic agreements and economic interests.

"American policy today under President Donald Trump is very pragmatic. It looks at economic agreements and transactional interests ," he said.

Along the same lines, Tomorri said that the European Union has so far maintained a tolerant approach towards the political situation in Albania.

The journalist criticized the perception that political change in the country could come from the intervention of international partners, emphasizing that the responsibility lies with Albanian citizens.

"Albanians should do this themselves," Tomorri declared on the "Task Force" show.

Tomorri:  Look, that it is a phenomenon, that it is a phenomenon that has occurred, that is, money laundering, which comes from drug activities, massively in Albania, everyone agrees on this, we have it in the reports that you cited from the European Parliament, the European Union, the State Department and so on.

That the Albanian government has resulted in connections with people who are part of these cartels, this is also a fact. Remember the story of the prime minister when the gentleman who was sanctioned by America as a member of the Sinaloa cartel, visited the prime minister's office, we were going to make a book with photos about Albania.

Then we know how the story of the book went.

And of course these organizations have injected huge amounts of money into the Albanian economy. Washington, Brussels, already know this, and have known it for a long time. Has this universally accepted fact brought about an intervention by these powers, so far not. Why? Because it is the history that Albania has had since 1940 or so, waiting for the allies to come, but the allies never came. I am a little skeptical about a very simple fact, American policy today under President Donald Trump is very pragmatic. You look at deals, bargains. So, it is transactionally oriented, towards economic agreements, and we saw that not more than a week ago, Albania became part of an agreement to buy a large amount of American gas.

But there is no ambassador in Albania, who is said to be very close to Donald Trump's circle. So, uh, that's as far as the United States is concerned.

As for the European Union, then we have seen what happens, our prime minister fixes these more easily with his own methods, because we know that he has become a master now, when he fixed the head of FBI counterintelligence, imagine what he does today.

We create a belief, we create a perception or we nurture a perception that, look, something will happen here, these allies will come and they will overthrow the government because this one did it.

They cannot tolerate indefinitely that an anarchic state is created here that is totally governed by drug cartels. But I don't think they will go so far as to tell Edi Rama to step down from the prime minister's chair because you are connected to crime, you are connected to drugs.

This should be done by the Albanians themselves. Yes. It is the Albanians and this is already, uh, I have even heard Mr. Berisha who has said several times that it is we who should overthrow him, it does not suit us.
