Head of the National Emergency, Skënder Brataj,

The Head of the National Emergency, Skënder Brataj, has spoken about the viruses that are affecting the country during the winter season, emphasizing that it is mainly seasonal flu and its subvariants, which find favorable conditions for spread during this period.

According to Brataj, this year, influenza A type is present, including subtypes H1N1 and H1N2, as well as influenza type 2. In parallel with them, other respiratory viruses are also circulating, such as RSV and Covid-19. He announced that this season a new subtype of influenza, called type K, has also been identified, to which the population does not yet have full immunity.

"The flu is a virus itself with its subvariants. This year we have type A, H1N1, H1N2, type 2, but also RSV and Covid. This year the flu even had a new subtype, type K, against which we are not fully protected, " Brataj told News 24.

Brataj emphasized that the long epidemiological period dominated by Covid-19 has contributed to the decrease in collective immunity to seasonal flu. This, according to him, has made the body more susceptible to other respiratory viruses currently circulating.

Regarding the duration of the disease, Brataj explained that the flu lasts an average of 7–8 days, but in some cases it can last even longer. The first few days are accompanied by high fever and severe symptoms, while later patients may feel improvement, although the virus continues to be active in the body.

"People often go out thinking they've recovered, but the virus continues to act. Cold is an enemy to tissues weakened by infection and this worsens the disease ," Brataj said.

Warning about the risk of premature exposure to the cold, Brataj stressed that tissues weakened by infection are more sensitive and exposure to low temperatures can worsen health conditions. He advised citizens that, even after symptoms improve, they should continue to rest, receive proper treatment, and avoid the cold, as the flu is a disease that requires time for full recovery.
