Throughout the last years, life expectancy in Albania has maintained a relatively stable pace until 2020 and 2021, where many demographic indicators succumbed to the impact of the pandemic. We recall that life expectancy at birth shows how many years people are expected to live, based on the specific mortality coefficients for a given year.
According to the data of the "Institute of Statistics", throughout the year 2022, life expectancy at birth seems to be following a positive trajectory, marking an increase. This indicator in Albania for the entire population was 79.1 years, while the figures of 2022 show that women in our country lived an average of 80.9 years, while men lived 77.3 years. So we can say that women lived 2.2 years longer than in 2021 and men 2.9 years longer, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, while women lived 3.6 years longer than men.
In 2022, the region with the highest expected life expectancy in the east is the region of Tirana with 82.8 years, followed by the regions of Durrës and Kukes with 81 years and 80.6 years respectively. According to Instat data, these three counties which lead the ranking are above the national average. Below the average comes the county of Elbasan with the expected life expectancy in the east at 78.7 years, followed by Dibra, Lezha, Vlora, Fieri and Berati. On the other hand, the three counties with the lowest life expectancy are Shkodra with 76.8 years, Korça with 76.3 years and Gjirokastra with 75.2 years.
As for life expectancy by gender and districts, the district with the highest indicator for men was Tirana, with 81.0 years, while the district with the lowest indicator was Gjirokastra, with 72.5 years. In the same year, the county with the highest life expectancy at birth for women was Tirana, with 84.5 years, while the county with the lowest indicator was Gjirokastra, with 77.9 years./ Scan
