205-kilometer pipeline from Tragjas to Puglia, with a capacity of 150 million cubic meters of water per year
The governments of Albania and Italy are reopening discussions on the construction of a water pipeline that will connect Tragjas with the Puglia region. The project aims to supply water to areas of southern Italy that face salinization and resource shortages.
The plan foresees the construction of a pipeline with a total length of 205 kilometers. Of these, 85 kilometers will be under the sea, while 120 kilometers will be on land. The pipeline will reach a depth of up to 850 meters below sea level and will transport about 150 million cubic meters of water per year to the Galugnano area in Salento.
The cost of the project is estimated at around 1 billion euros. Financing is expected to be covered by the Italian side and international financial institutions, including the European Investment Bank.
According to forecasts, the works will last about four years and will create over 3,000 jobs in Albania.
The idea for this infrastructure is not new. Albanian and Italian authorities first discussed it in the 1960s, but Albania's isolation halted its development. The project was brought back to attention during the government of Fatos Nano, without managing to secure funding and political support.
Recent discussions between Prime Minister Edi Rama and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, during the latter's visit to Vlora, have brought the project back onto the bilateral agenda. Prime Minister Rama has stressed that its implementation depends on the commitment of the Italian government, given the financial and technical dimensions of the investment.
At this stage, the parties are examining options to move the project forward in the context of the water resources crisis in the region.
