Using the money from corruption, Basho emerged as a “new politician” and managed to be elected as the local party leader in Saranda, tying the knot with the political center. This was only the first step towards seizing public positions that later paved the way for much greater abuses.
Feruz Basho has become one of the most scandalous figures in the south, a typical example of what is known as the capture of the state by corruption and politics. His career is a clear path of abuse: from the destruction of forests, to dubious tenders and waste manipulation, always protected by the party.
The beginning of his career is connected with his duty as a forest policeman in Saranda. It was there, according to numerous denunciations, that Feruz Basho seriously abused his duty by allowing massive deforestation and illegally selling timber. The financial benefits from this activity became a springboard for his political ambitions.
Using the money from corruption, Basho emerged as a “new politician” and managed to be elected as the local party leader in Saranda, tying the knot with the political center. This was only the first step towards seizing public positions that later paved the way for much greater abuses.
From local politics, Feruz Basho was catapulted to the position of director of the Bistrica hydroelectric power plant, a strategic energy asset in the south of the country. In this position, he has developed a series of dubious tenders, favoring companies connected to the government and channeling public funds towards private interests. Various sources speak of inflated contracts, manipulated costs and non-transparent procedures.
After Bistrica, Feruz Basho did not stop. He was appointed administrator of the Delvina landfill, another position that gives him endless opportunities for abuse. Denunciations from private entities speak of a clear scheme of manipulation of the weight of collected waste. Each ton of garbage, in documents, is marked more than reality, and the difference is translated into personal profit and bribes to keep the chair.
This is silent, everyday corruption that affects local finances, citizens' taxes, and increases the costs of cleaning services.
The scandal culminates in the fact that Feruz Basho continues to hold the position of administrator even though he has been retired for over two years. The law clearly states that in such cases, the official must be removed from office. But not when it comes to a party-protected scoundrel. On the contrary, the government keeps him/her in office, guaranteeing the continuation of abusive schemes.
In any normal country, a figure like Feruz Basho would not only be dismissed, but also investigated by the prosecution and SPAK. The Bistrica tenders, the abuses with forests, the manipulation of the weight of waste in the landfill and the dubious wealth he has accumulated are sufficient reasons for a voluminous criminal file.
But in Albania, where politics protects corruption and rewards it with positions, Feruz Basho continues to remain untouchable.
An urgent investigation is required by SPAK and law enforcement institutions into the Bistrica tenders, the abuses with the Delvina landfill, and Feruz Basho's assets.
SPAK apparently does not investigate without party orders, as scandals like the Feruz Basho case, from forest abuses, Bistrica tenders and manipulations in the Delvina landfill, continue to remain unpunished, while a person who has passed retirement age continues to be kept in office only thanks to political protection.
The legality of Feruz Basho's stay in office, beyond retirement age, must be verified, and it must be made transparent who the person is who favors him, but apparently there is no one to investigate this either, as he is protected by his niece, prosecutor Esmeranda Basho.
Without the investigation and punishment of figures like Feruz Basho, justice in Albania will remain selective, used only against the weak, while the corrupt will continue to govern at the expense of citizens.
Below we will write about how Feruz Basho, with a state salary and dubious sources, has managed to purchase and create a staggering fortune of 10 apartments in the city of Saranda, wealth that raises major questions about its legality and real source.
Below we will publish facts and evidence on how Feruz Basho intentionally overbills the Delvina landfill, manipulating the weight of waste to benefit financially, as well as what corrupt tenders he has conducted during his tenure, damaging the public budget and the interests of citizens./In-Front.org
