107 arrested during protests in Georgia, clashes between police and protesters

107 people were arrested during clashes between protesters and police in the capital of Georgia.

Thousands of people have been on the streets for several days after the government decided to stop negotiations with the European Union for membership. Elections are expected to be held on December 14, while the ruling party, "Georgian Dream", has nominated the former Manchester City striker, Mikael Kavelashvili, as the official candidate for president of the country.

The 53-year-old was once part of this party, but in 2016 he founded the new party, "People's Power". And yet, he is in coalition with his former party led by oligarch Bixina Ivanishvili. The latter is known for his pro-Russian tendencies. His party also includes another prominent ex-footballer, Kakaber Kalaxe, ex-Milan player who is currently the mayor of the capital city, Tbilisi.

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili urged police not to use force against protesters late Friday, after 107 more people were arrested in overnight clashes, AP reports.

Police used force to disperse a large crowd gathered in Tbilisi, using water cannons, spray and in some cases, brutally beating protesters, according to eyewitnesses, including an AP reporter on the ground.

The president also praised the citizens for the fight for democracy. According to her, no one is ready to accept a Russified Georgia, a Georgia deprived of its constitution or a Georgia in the hands of an illegitimate government and parliament.

Georgia's Interior Ministry confirmed that 107 people were arrested during an overnight protest in Tbilisi.
