The United States is escalating its military presence in the Middle East at an unusual pace, while tensions with Iran are at their highest point since 2020. Air and naval monitoring sources confirm to the BBC coordinated movements of American warships, military aircraft and drones towards the Persian Gulf, in a clear demonstration of force that many see as preparation for a possible military intervention against the Islamic Republic.

The latest data shows that the US guided-missile destroyer USS Delbert D. Black has been seen passing through the Suez Canal and heading towards the Gulf. This development comes as at least 10 US warships are already in the region, including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, which, although not seen on public radar for more than a week, has been officially confirmed by Pentagon sources as being active in the area.

US air activity is equally intense. A V-22 Osprey aircraft has been spotted flying over the Persian Gulf towards Oman, a signal that suggests the movement of elite US commandos, who usually operate from the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln. At the same time, the US Navy's advanced MQ-4C Triton drones have been seen patrolling the Strait of Hormuz for hours, with flights starting every day since Monday. These drones are specialized for extended maritime surveillance and are able to collect detailed data near the Iranian coast. Meanwhile, P-8 Poseidon aircraft, used for maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare missions, are also active in the area.

Another sophisticated US aircraft, the E-11A, has been tracked flying from Crete to Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. The aircraft functions as an airborne communications hub, connecting US forces on the ground with strategic commands in real time and under wartime conditions.

In the same line of escalation, the US has also deployed to Britain the specialized WC-135R Constant Phoenix aircraft, known as the “nuclear sniffer plane”. This aircraft has the capacity to detect nuclear explosions and the presence of radioactive substances in the atmosphere, and is commonly used near Russia. Its deployment to a British air base, for the third time in four decades, reinforces speculation that Washington is finalizing preparations for a strike on Iran, perhaps also preparing for possible nuclear responses or radioactive contamination incidents.

The move comes as President Donald Trump has signaled he is ready to take direct military action against Tehran, amid heightened tensions and recent diplomatic clashes. With no sign of a de-escalation, the US appears to be positioning its military might to command total control of the Persian Gulf in the event of an imminent clash with Iran.
