Precious metals are rising sharply amid ongoing political, economic and trade turmoil that has lasted for nearly a year.

Gold has broken a new historical record, reaching $1,800 per 100 grams. The rise in gold is more than just a market movement; it is a warning sign.

The global order built over the past 80 years, including the international financial system, is under pressure. Whether global finance will withstand this stress test will depend largely on political decisions.

Precious metals are also benefiting from the weakening dollar, which has fallen sharply after President Trump signaled this week that he was happy with the currency's weakness since the start of the year. This has only added to fears of currency devaluation, making gold more attractive.

“This noise you hear is that of gold targets for 2026 being hastily revised higher as the price continues to rise and gets a new boost from Trump’s comments on the dollar. This will excite the bearish traders as it reinforces their case. Every time precious metals look like they are losing momentum, something happens to save them. As long as international investors continue to flee the dollar, the future for gold looks bright indeed,” says Chris Beauchamp, Financial Markets analyst.

Concerns about the independence of the US central bank are also supporting the price of gold.

Although the US Federal Reserve resisted pressure from Trump and kept interest rates unchanged last night, it could cut rates once a new chairman is appointed to replace Jerome Powell later this year. That could further weaken the dollar and increase inflation, two conditions that are favorable for the price of gold.

The rise in precious metals prices is "dizzying and deeply frightening," warns Robin Brooks, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.
