Ceasefire on the verge of collapse? Israel and Lebanon meet in US amid fresh

Officials from Israel and Lebanon will meet in Washington on Thursday to organize another round of US-brokered talks, as violence between Israel and Hezbollah flares and the fragile ceasefire risks collapsing completely.

Both Lebanon and Israel have added officials to their delegations for the next round of talks. In addition to Lebanese Ambassador to the United States, Nada Hamadeh Moawad, the delegation will also include Lebanese special envoy and former ambassador to the United States, Simon Karam, according to a State Department official.

The Israeli delegation will include the Israeli ambassador to the US, Yechiel Leiter, deputy national security adviser, Yossi Drazni, and senior military representatives.

The American delegation will again include State Department Counselor Michael Needham, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, and U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio will not attend, as he is in Beijing with President Donald Trump. An Israeli official said the talks are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Eastern time.

There have been ongoing cross-border attacks between Israel and Hezbollah in recent days. Israeli strikes killed at least 12 people, including a mother and two children, in Lebanon on Wednesday, according to health officials.

Hezbollah also carried out 10 attacks on Israeli military posts on Wednesday, according to multiple statements from the group. Israeli forces crossed the key Litani River border into southern Lebanon this week, a military official told CNN.
