Mojtaba Khamenei

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has provided some insight into the Iranian government's thinking amid a fundamental leadership transition following the assassination of several key figures.

On nuclear weapons, Araghchi said the Rani remains within the lines previously set by Khamenei.

" Khamenei's father and predecessor had banned weapons of mass destruction in a fatwa in the early 2000s," he said.

Araghchi added that the new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has not yet expressed an opinion on the legitimacy of nuclear weapons, but expects them not to change much from previous policy.

-Strait of Hormuz

Araghchi supported a new protocol for ships to use the main shipping corridor, which Iran has effectively closed, driving up oil prices.

He seemed to imply that Iran wants to maintain firm control over the waterway after the war, saying that peaceful navigation required "consideration of Iran's interests" and that safe passage should be possible "under specific conditions."

-Attacks on neighbors

Iran has previously claimed it is only targeting US forces in neighboring countries. Araghchi explained in the interview that the strikes on non-military areas were a reaction to the deployment of US forces "near urban areas." Araghchi acknowledged that countries in the region are "upset" but said the US is to blame.
