Given the escalation in both Europe and the Middle East, nuclear war remains a matter of "gambling"; if we're lucky enough we'll manage to avoid it, otherwise we'll lose everything!
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a nuclear war has been the scenario most feared by the West. Moscow's threats to start a nuclear war have been consistent, recently they have been more serious and direct.
Just a few months ago, the Russian president took a frightening step, approving changes to its nuclear tactics, which would allow the Kremlin to respond with nuclear weapons to any state that threatens Russia directly or indirectly, in this case by arming Ukraine with long-range weapons and giving it permission to attack Russia.
These statements and moves by Moscow have forced the largest military alliance, NATO, to start preparing for the worst. The alliance has begun training for a military response in the event of a nuclear war.
NATO began its annual "Steadfast Noon" military exercise in northern Europe on Monday with the participation of 2,000 troops from 13 NATO countries and 60 military aircraft.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the exercises will take place mainly in the United Kingdom, the North Sea and Belgium and the Netherlands. He said the exercises are intended to send a clear message to adversaries that NATO is prepared to defend itself.
" The exercises have been planned and prepared for more than a year and no live ammunition will be used in the exercises ," NATO said.
The maneuvers will last two weeks. Eight air bases will be involved and aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons, bombers and reconnaissance and electronic warfare aircraft will take part in the exercise.
NATO's press service said the Alliance is taking steps to ensure the reliability and effectiveness of its nuclear deterrent forces.
In 2024, the new Dutch F35A fighters were recognized as suitable for use in nuclear deterrence missions.
NATO's Washington Summit Declaration has made it clear that the fundamental purpose of NATO's nuclear capability is to maintain peace, deter coercion and deter aggression, while adding that as long as nuclear weapons exist, NATO will to remain a nuclear alliance.
With war now raging not only in Ukraine but also in the Middle East, the start of a nuclear war seems closer than ever. In addition to Russia, Iran and North Korea, which are suspected to have developed their nuclear capabilities, are a threat that could start a nuclear war.
