Mussolini's villa

The municipality of Riccione in Italy has purchased the villa where Benito Mussolini spent his summer holidays, in order to prevent the property from ending up in the hands of people with sympathy for fascism.

The mayor, Daniela Angelini, described the purchase through auction as "an act of love and vision," emphasizing that the return of the villa to public ownership constitutes a victory for the local community.

According to authorities, the municipality was facing competition from a private buyer, a former member of the Italian Social Movement, a neo-fascist party created after World War II by supporters of Mussolini.

The villa, built in 1893 near the Adriatic coast, was purchased in 1934 by Mussolini's second wife, Rachele. During the fascist regime, the dictator often used the residence for government activities, arriving there by seaplane. The property was expanded over the years to include several floors, numerous rooms and sports facilities.

After the fall of the fascist regime, the villa passed into public ownership and was used for various functions over the decades, including commercial activities. In the late 1990s, it was purchased by a local bank, which restored it and opened it for cultural and public activities.

Local authorities intend for the villa to continue to serve as a space for exhibitions and events, while preserving its historical value in a public and transparent context.
