The European Union is "ready for all scenarios," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen declared today, following US threats of an additional 25% tariff on vehicles imported from the EU.
"A deal is a deal," he recalled, however, during a press conference in Yerevan, referring to the trade agreement between the EU and the Trump administration, which was reached in July and limited customs tariffs on European vehicles sold in the United States to 15%.
"We have an agreement and the essence of this agreement is prosperity, common rules and reliability," he also stated, recalling that the United States is committed to respecting the borders set in July 2025.
On Friday, Donald Trump threatened the European bloc with new additional tariffs on cars and trucks exported to the United States, accusing the EU of not respecting the trade agreement signed between the two sides of the Atlantic.
European Commissioner for Trade, Maroš Šefčovič, is expected to meet today in Paris with the White House representative for trade, Jamieson Greer, as part of a ministerial meeting of the Group of Seven (G7), the most industrialized countries, in the French capital.
Yesterday, Monday, the European Commission confirmed its willingness to implement the signed agreement, rejecting the American accusations.
"We have been implementing the agreement since day one and remain fully committed to respecting our commitments ," said Commission spokesman Thomas Regnier.
The European Parliament conditionally approved the agreement between the United States and the EU, but the bloc's internal procedures stipulate that it must also be negotiated with member states before it can be officially implemented.
According to Regnier, the EU has kept Washington "fully informed throughout the process" and has aimed to "reassure the other side of the Atlantic, the work is continuing. Progress is being made."
