Seven police officers have been injured and two people have been arrested after a massive accident involving four police cars and two civilians.
Police said officers had attempted to stop a car in the Whickham area of Gateshead at around 2am on Wednesday due to concerns over the way it was being driven.
The car left the area and a pursuit was authorized when it was spotted around 2:25 a.m. Two minutes later the car and five police vehicles were involved in the accident.

All seven police officers were injured, but fortunately their lives were not in danger. Four of the injured have left the hospital, while two remain in the hospital under medical observation, where one is being treated for a leg injury.
In photos published by British media, four heavily damaged police vehicles can be seen, along with a car on its side.

The two occupants of a BMW M Sport involved in the collision were fortunately uninjured. Police said a man and a woman, both in their 20s, have been arrested on suspicion of causing a serious accident by dangerous driving. Both remain in custody.

Images also showed debris strewn along the northbound carriageway. One of the police vehicles had its roof torn off.

"An investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances of the incident and to appeal to anyone with information that could help us move forward. We would also ask people to avoid speculation both online and in the community that could affect the investigation ," said investigator Michelle Caisley.
