The Danish government decided to reduce the number of diplomats in the Russian embassy in Copenhagen to 5 and the administrative staff to 20, Moscow also responded with a similar move.
" The decision to balance the staff of the two embassies means that the Russian embassy in Copenhagen has to reduce its current staff ," the Danish Foreign Ministry said in a statement today.
The staff reduction must be implemented by September 29, the ministry added.
It was not immediately clear how many diplomats and other workers would have to leave the Russian embassy.
Denmark and Russia have been negotiating for a long time about visas for employees of the Danish embassy in Moscow in order for the embassies to function smoothly in both Denmark and Russia, the Danish Foreign Ministry said.
" The negotiations did not lead to results due to repeated Russian attempts to include visa requirements for Russian intelligence officials in the framework of these negotiations ," the ministry added.
The request shows a "hostile attitude", according to Moscow
The Russian Foreign Ministry said today that Denmark's demand that Moscow limit its staff at its embassy in Copenhagen is another manifestation of its hostile attitude.
