Red Sea war arena, the US and Great Britain escalate attacks on the Houthi

The United States and the United Kingdom have launched strikes against dozens of Houthi targets in Yemen.

The Pentagon says warplanes have carried out strikes in 18 countries, the fourth joint operation by the allies against the Houthis.

The strikes included weapons depots, drones, air defense systems, radar and a helicopter, the Defense Department said. The armies of the United States and the United Kingdom acted with the support of Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands and New Zealand.

The Pentagon chief said the US  "will not hesitate to act, if necessary, to protect human life and freedom of commerce in one of the world's most critical waterways" and the Houthis will pay the consequences if they don't. to stop their illegal attacks ".

The UK says the allies acted to "further degrade" Houthi capabilities.

" These precision strikes are intended to disrupt and degrade the capabilities the Houthis use to threaten global trade, shipping and the lives of innocent sailors in one of the world's most critical waterways."

In a joint statement, the Pentagon said that  "already more than 45 Houthi attacks on commercial and naval vessels since mid-November pose a threat to the global economy, as well as regional security and stability, and require an international response ".

The US military said earlier it had destroyed seven Houthi mobile anti-ship missiles that were being prepared for strikes.

The Houthis are an armed political and religious group that supports Yemen's Shiite Muslim minority, the Zaydis. In response to the war in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis began firing drones and rockets at Israel. There have been ongoing attacks by the Iran-backed Houthis on shipping vessels in the important Red Sea trade route.

The Houthis, who control large areas of Yemen including the capital Sanaa, have targeted ships they say are linked to Israel and the West in response to the ongoing Israel-Gaza war. Global supply chains are now facing disruptions and rising costs as some of the biggest shipping companies divert voyages from the Red Sea.
