Former President Donald Trump has stated that he will impose additional tariffs on Chinese goods if he is re-elected President of the United States.
In an interview with Fox News, he said that these tariffs should be above 60%.
"We have to do this," he said during an interview with Fox News on Sunday.
Trump is the main candidate for the Republican Party, but he is facing several criminal charges, including trying to overturn the result of the 2020 elections. But he has denied all the charges.
Trump is known for accusing China of unfair trade practices and theft of intellectual property.
"Understand, I'm obviously not looking to hurt China. I want to get along with him. But they have really taken advantage of our country," Trump said.
During his presidency, Trump instigated a trade war between the two largest economies after imposing billions of dollars worth of tariffs on Chinese goods. His administration imposed the tariffs in 2018 to curb Chinese imports. This policy was extended to goods ranging from seafood to chemicals.
Even official Beijing responded with tariffs on US imports including soybeans, wheat and poultry.
As for the current administration of President Joe Biden, it has kept tariffs unchanged despite criticism that it has helped raise prices and made the US economy less competitive. The US has been China's largest export market for more than two decades.
However, reining in US-China economic ties is gaining support among Republican and Democratic lawmakers. A recent House Committee report recommended higher tariffs on imports from China and restrictions on Chinese investment in the US.
