Tulsi Gabbard will step down as US Director of National Intelligence (DNI) after a tense period in Donald Trump's administration, where reports suggest she was marginalized in decision-making, particularly regarding policies towards Iran and Venezuela.
In a letter to the US president, Gabbard announced that her resignation will take effect on June 30.
“While we have made significant progress ... I recognize that significant work still remains to be done,” she wrote.
Reuters reported, citing a source familiar with the developments, that the White House forced Gabbard to leave the post. Meanwhile, Fox News initially reported that the main reason for the departure was related to the health of her husband, who has been diagnosed with a very rare form of bone cancer.
According to US media, Trump had discussed with cabinet members last month the possibility of replacing Gabbard. Two sources briefed on the discussions said the president had expressed dissatisfaction with her, at a time when the administration was facing tensions over intelligence assessments on Iran.
