A 60-year-old British tourist has been charged in Dubai under cybercrime laws after allegedly filming Iranian missiles over the city during recent attacks in the region.
The man was reportedly detained by UAE authorities under a law that prohibits the publication or distribution of material that could threaten public safety. The news was confirmed by the organization Detained in Dubai, which provides legal assistance to foreigners in the country.
UK Foreign Office officials are said to be in contact with the tourist's family and are following up on the matter.
The UAE's Minister of State for European Union Relations, Lana Nusseibeh, told the BBC that she was aware of some violations of the law related to the publication of the materials, but did not provide specific details about the British man's case. She stressed that legal procedures would be followed and warned that filming attacks could endanger the people who do so.
According to Radha Stirling, head of the organization Detained in Dubai, a total of 21 people have been charged under cybercrime laws in connection with videos and social media posts about the missile attacks.
She said police found a video on the British tourist's phone showing an Iranian missile strike on Dubai. According to her, the formal charges are very vague and it is not clear from the legal documents what specific offense he is being attributed to.
Stirling added that his family has managed to communicate with him after the detention and that authorities may be acting to limit the publication of footage of the attacks in order to preserve Dubai's image as a safe destination for tourists.
