US President-elect Donald Trump said he believed Turkey and its President Recep Tayyip Erdogan were behind the recent events in Syria, which resulted in the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad's regime.
"Nobody knows who the other side is. But I know, Turkey. Erdogan is a very smart guy, he wanted this for years and he got it. Those people who got in are controlled by Turkey and that's OK, it's another way to fight," Trump said.
Trump went on to say that he would not want any American troops to be killed in Syria, but ended by saying that "nobody knows" what the outcome of the conflict in the Middle East would be.
Trump did not directly answer when asked whether he thinks Ukraine should cede territory to Russia as part of a negotiated settlement to the nearly three-year war. The newly elected president even stressed that Zelensky should be ready to make a deal.
Trump said much of the disputed area has been reduced to rubble and will take a century to recover.
