Hamas has released a video showing the first test of life of two hostages being held in Gaza.
The images are undated. But in the video, Omri Miran says he has been staying for 202 days, while Keith Siegel, an Israeli-American citizen, mentions this week's Passover, a sign that the videos were filmed recently.
Both were captured when Hamas launched its deadly attacks on October 7, 2023.
The families of the hostages called on the Israeli government to secure a new deal for their release.
This is Hamas' new strategy, to use kidnapped Israelis as 'witnesses' to the negotiations to force the Israeli government not to attack Rafah but to pursue a possible deal
Thus Hamas responds to the strategy of the Netanyahu government, which threatens a devastating attack on Rafah, contrary to any call to avert humanitarian catastrophe.
If Israel were to actually tank the town on the Egyptian border, the last remaining stronghold of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, it would be carnage and risk killing the hostages; but it would also be a death blow to the Hamas group and their leaders stationed there, possibly including leader Yahya Sinwar.
