South Africa's ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethëa, has been found dead after allegedly falling from the 22nd floor of a luxury hotel in Paris.
French authorities have launched an investigation, while prosecutors confirmed that the diplomat's body was found on Tuesday at noon, near the hotel where he was staying.
Local media reports that Mthethea's wife contacted the police after receiving a "disturbing message" from him on Monday night.
This led to the launch of a search operation, during which dog units were also used to search the area near the Bois de Boulogne, a large forest west of Paris.
The ambassador's phone was last tracked in the area around 3 p.m. on Monday. However, his body was found a day later, on the terrace of the Hyatt Hotel, where his room window had reportedly been forced open, according to French newspaper Le Parisien.
French prosecutors have not ruled out the possibility of suicide, but say the investigation is still ongoing. An investigating magistrate has visited the scene, and a forensic report is awaited.
The ambassador was a well-known figure in South Africa's political scene. He began his career as an activist and later entered politics, serving as the Organising Secretary of the ANC Youth League, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Mines and Energy, Minister of Police during the presidencies of Kgalema Motlanthe and Jacob Zuma, Minister of Arts and Culture, and then Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture until 2023.
In early 2024, he was appointed ambassador to France and simultaneously permanent representative of South Africa to UNESCO.
