Greece held this Sunday the second round of local elections for municipalities that failed to elect mayors in the first round.
The results were severe for Prime Minister Kyriakos Mistotakis. The candidates of his "New Democracy" party were not confirmed in either Athens or Thessaloniki, two of the country's largest municipalities.
The biggest surprise was in Athens where incumbent mayor Kostas Bakoyanis was defeated by Haris Doukas, a candidate supported by PASOK. Also in Thessaloniki, Stelios Angeloudis, who ran as an independent, but supported by PASOK, was declared the winner of the runoff with 67% of the votes. He defeated Konstantinos Zervas, supported by the government. After the release of these results, the Prime Minister, Mitsotakis, reacted immediately.
"It was not a particularly good night for New Democracy, but political conclusions will come later. I want to congratulate all the district leaders and mayors who were elected and assure them that it is the duty of the government to cooperate with them. We expect a fruitful and productive cooperation", said the Greek Prime Minister.
"The government must have its feet firmly on the ground", he stressed, referring to the political messages that the ballot boxes gave. "Let me remind you that the strength of all parties was shown in the national elections. There was a backlash of forces against New Democracy," he added, noting particularly low turnout.
"I will say only one thing. The government must fight with all its forces with emphasis on its reform agenda. For those who rush to celebrate, let me remind you that a few months ago we had national elections in which the strength of the parties was registered with absolute clarity", said the Greek Prime Minister, adding that the government is here to work with them".
