Former United States President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, which has metastasized to the bones, according to an official statement from his personal office released on Friday.
The news was first reported by the Associated Press news agency and confirmed by multiple sources, including Reuters and Rolling Stone.
The Biden family statement said the former president, 82, and his family are reviewing treatment options following the serious diagnosis.
"We are shocked, but determined to fight. We thank everyone for your support and prayers during this difficult time ," the statement said.
In March 2023, his physician, Dr. Kevin O'Connor, reported that a cancerous lesion (basal cell carcinoma) was removed from Biden's chest and required no further treatment. Additionally, in May 2025, a "small lump" was reported on Biden's prostate, which could have been benign or cancerous, but the latter diagnosis was described as much more serious.
Biden, who ends his presidential term in January 2025, has been a vocal advocate for the fight against cancer, especially after the death of his son, Beau Biden, in 2015 from brain cancer (glioblastoma). He relaunched the “Cancer Moonshot” initiative in 2022, with the goal of reducing cancer deaths by 50% by 2047.
At this time, no additional information has been released about the former president's treatment plan or his current health status. Biden's office has requested privacy as the family faces this new challenge.
