Clashes, blockades and a clear demand: Stop the war!
On one of the most socially and politically charged days of the year, thousands of Italian citizens took to the streets of over 100 cities across the country in a nationwide protest against the war in Gaza and in support of the Palestinian people. Calling for peace, justice and respect for international law, the demonstrations organized under the umbrella of the CGIL union turned into an explosion of civic revolt, challenging the Italian government and its tacit ties with the Israeli regime.
Milan was the epicenter of the mobilization. According to independent estimates, over 50,000 people took part in the main march, while the CGIL reported that the number of participants in this city reached up to 100,000. The crowd of protesters blocked the main streets of the city and then occupied a section of the Tangenziale Est motorway, causing violent clashes with the police. During these clashes, stones, bottles, firecrackers and other objects were thrown, while the police responded with tear gas, water cannons and crowd-dispersal maneuvers. Some youth groups chanted “We are going to Venice,” defying the limits of the authorized protest.
The situation was no calmer in other cities either. In Turin, a group broke away from the march and tried to attack the headquarters of the military company “Leonardo”, where vehicles related to the production of weapons were located. In Naples, protesters broke through the police cordon and penetrated the city port, blocking traffic on the A3 motorway for more than an hour. In Padua, tear gas and water cannon were used to stop the march towards Interport, a strategic logistics hub. In Pisa, the runway of the “Galileo Galilei” airport was occupied, while in Trieste there were episodes of violence against journalists.
According to official figures from the Italian Interior Ministry (Viminale), 29 demonstrations were held across the country, with a total of 396,400 participants. But this figure contradicts figures from the CGIL union, which claims that the protests have brought together more than 2 million citizens across the country. Viminale also reported that 55 police officers have been injured during clashes with protesters in the past two days.
Beyond the contradictory figures, the truth is that Italy is experiencing one of the largest social movements of the last decade. This protest of extraordinary proportions is no longer simply a humanitarian reaction to the genocide in Gaza, but a strong political signal to the Italian ruling class and to any international structure that condones or remains silent in the face of war crimes.
The citizens' revolt is a reflection of the moral explosion of a society that refuses to be complicit through indifference. The demand is clear: stop any military, commercial or logistical cooperation with the Israeli regime, open humanitarian routes to Gaza and respect the right to life of a people who have been experiencing a catastrophe of historic proportions for months. /Pamphlet
