Romania is facing a new political crisis following the decision of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) to withdraw support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, a development that has led to the resignation of six ministers and Deputy Prime Minister Marian Neacsu.

According to the PSD's official announcement, the resignations include the ministers of agriculture, energy, foreign affairs, justice, health and transport. The party stressed that this step represents the formalization of the political decision to no longer support the government led by Bolojan.

However, the Social Democrats declared that they will continue to support the adoption of necessary laws in parliament, especially those related to projects funded by the European Union, until a new government is formed.

The current crisis comes after an open clash within the ruling coalition. The PSD, which has the largest parliamentary group, accuses the prime minister and the National Liberal Party of austerity policies that, according to them, have worsened the economic situation and increased the cost of living.

PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu declared that the party “cannot remain hostage any longer,” signaling a clear breach of the coalition agreement. Bolojan, on the other hand, refused to resign and accused his partners of deliberately destabilizing the country.

"The country's finances and the stability of the government are being jeopardized," he declared, adding that the criticized decisions were made jointly within the coalition.

The situation is expected to escalate further, as the prime minister could face a no-confidence motion in parliament in the coming days. In parallel, the right-wing opposition has called for early elections, while support for it is growing according to recent polls.

Romania has been in a cycle of political instability since 2024, when presidential elections were canceled due to suspicions of foreign interference. The current government, formed in early 2025, has been fragile and plagued by ongoing tensions between partners.

The interpretation of developments points to a real risk of prolonging the political crisis at a time when the country is also facing economic challenges, including a high budget deficit that is projected to reach around 9 percent of Gross Domestic Product.
