A fire broke out in the early hours of Friday at the Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery of the Kuwait National Oil Company (KNPC), after the facility was hit by drone attacks, state news agency KUNA reported.
According to Kuwaiti authorities, the flames engulfed several units of the refinery, while firefighting teams were engaged in bringing the situation under control. So far, no casualties have been reported.
According to official reports, Friday's attack is the second in two days against the same facility, after another strike that caused a fire was recorded in Mina Al-Ahmadi the day before. As a safety measure, some units of the refinery have been temporarily closed, while damage assessment and the operation to completely isolate the flames continue.
The event is seen as part of a wider wave of tensions in the region, where the energy infrastructure of Gulf countries has become the target of drone and missile attacks.
The Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery is a key player in Kuwait's energy sector. According to KNPC, it is part of the country's main refining network and, together with the Mina Abdullah refinery, forms the basis of the state-owned company's refining capacity. For this reason, any attack on this facility is considered to have a potential impact not only on the domestic market, but also on the stability of regional supplies.
The latest attack adds to concerns about the security of oil infrastructure in the Persian Gulf, at a time when international markets are reacting to the risk of supply disruptions. International reports indicate that the tensions of recent days have put new pressure on energy prices and the security of strategic export corridors in the region.
