Qatar's Foreign Ministry has confirmed that it is trying to mediate between Hamas and Israeli officials.

Speaking to the Reuters news agency, a spokesman announced that negotiations, including a possible prisoner exchange, had been ongoing since Saturday night and were "progressing positively".

"Our priorities are to end the bloodshed, release the prisoners and ensure that the conflict is contained without regional spillover, " Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari said.

The number of Israeli hostages held in Gaza remains unclear, but it is widely believed that Hamas kidnapped more than 130 women, children, the elderly and soldiers.

Hamas has said it is not open to negotiating a prisoner exchange, according to spokesman Hossam Badran, who spoke to the AFP news agency.

The Israeli military says it has deployed helicopters to attack targets inside Lebanon.

A video widely shared on social media shows a Hezbollah observation base being bombed.

Earlier the IDF said it had killed at least two gunmen who crossed from Lebanon into Israel.
