A shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis, which killed two children and injured 17 others, is being investigated by the FBI as an act of domestic terrorism and a hate crime against Catholics.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the attack was “an act of violence motivated by hatred against Catholics.” The two victims, ages 8 and 10, were shot to death Wednesday morning while attending Mass at Annunciation Church. The gunman, identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman, died at the scene of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara described the attack as "a deliberate act of violence against children and worshippers." He added that "the cruelty of shooting at a church filled with children is unfathomable."
Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, expressed deep sorrow for the child victims. Meanwhile, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said President Donald Trump had sent condolences and that the American flag would be lowered to half-staff in honor of the victims.
According to police, the attacker used three weapons, a rifle, a shotgun and a pistol, firing dozens of shots from outside the windows of the church, which also housed a school with students aged 5 to 14. One of the survivors, a 10-year-old boy, told local media that his friend saved him by lying on top of him, but he himself was injured.
Investigations are ongoing to uncover the exact motives for the attack, while authorities confirmed that a note planned by the perpetrator to be published online at the time of the shooting was also found.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has signed a presidential proclamation to honor the victims of the tragic shooting that occurred today at a school in Minneapolis.
Trump described the event as a "senseless act of violence" and ordered flags at the White House and across the United States to be flown at half-staff.
According to the official announcement, flags will remain at half-mast until sunset on August 31, 2025.
