The President of America, Joe Biden called for a "pause" in the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, after he faced a protester who asked him for a ceasefire between the two countries.
Biden was speaking on the campaign trail when the woman shouted: " Call for a truce now."
Biden responded by saying "I think we need a pause. A pause means giving time to get the prisoners out."
The White House clarified that Biden was referring to the hostages held by Hamas since its October 7 attack on Israel, in which 1,400 people were killed and more than 200 were taken hostage.
Earlier, the White House has announced that it is in favor of a ceasefire to allow the delivery of aid to Gaza and the release of hostages. Biden has supported Israel, but he has changed his stance in recent weeks as the humanitarian situation worsens in Gaza and the death toll rises.
The president has faced pressure from human rights groups, other world leaders and even liberal members of his own Democratic Party, who say Israel's bombing of Gaza is collective punishment and that it is time for a ceasefire.
