A cigarette lit by a patient undergoing oxygen therapy caused a devastating fire in the medical department of the Fratelli Parlapiano hospital in Ribera, Italy.
The 53-year-old Romanian took off the mask that continued to emit oxygen to smoke. The spark from the lighter ignited the flames and the immediate explosion of the oxygen cylinder.
Firefighters then found the 53-year-old dead, while four other hospitalized patients were evacuated. The fire broke out just before 8:00 p.m., as flames and smoke engulfed the ward on the first floor of the hospital.
The flames were extinguished after the arrival of firefighters, and authorities reported that no other people were injured or suffocated, but the entire hospital ward is not functional.
The caretaker prosecutor at the Sciacca prosecutor's office, who opened the investigation, ordered the seizure of the area affected by the fire.
