Plans change, no Putin-Trump meeting!

White House closes door on Trump-Putin meeting: No plans for an imminent summit

The Trump-Putin meeting in Hungary risks failure.

A White House official confirmed today that there are no concrete plans for an imminent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This statement comes after a phone call earlier between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, a conversation that was described as "productive" by both sides.

According to SkyNews sources from Washington, the Rubio-Lavrov conversation has yielded sufficient results in a diplomatic sense, making an immediate meeting between the leaders of the two countries unnecessary. Another phone call between the two foreign ministers is expected to take place within this week, which suggests that communication will continue at a high level, but without yet moving into a new phase of presidential dialogue.

The last meeting between Trump and Putin took place in August, in the US state of Alaska, a summit that caused strong reactions both within the US and in the international arena, especially for the way the conflict in Ukraine and European security issues were handled.

Last week, the two leaders had agreed, in principle, to meet again in Hungary. But according to sources close to the diplomatic process, this possibility has now been called into question due to Russia's unchanged position on the war in Ukraine. Moscow rejects any form of retreat or compromise, questioning the very meaning of a summit at this stage.

In the background, US-Russia clashes remain heated on key issues such as the supply of weapons to Ukraine, NATO expansion to the East, military activities in the Arctic, and cyber interference.

Just a few days ago, President Trump held a tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who demanded more engagement and guarantees of military and political assistance at a time when the war with Russia has entered a protracted and uncertain phase.

In this context, the cancellation of a quick meeting with Putin is seen as a clear signal that diplomacy is not close to bringing about a final solution. More than a tactical move, this decision shows that the war in Ukraine may drag on and that peace, for the time being, remains a distant horizon.
