From Mar-a-Lago to the White House, the mystery of Trump's assassins

A series of incidents near the White House and Mar-a-Lago residence has reignited the debate over presidential security and the social situation in the US...

Another weekend, another failed and, frankly, pretty pathetic attempt to assassinate the President of the United States. On Sunday, February 22, the Secret Service shot and killed a 21-year-old gunman named Austin Tucker Martin, who had entered the Mar-a-Lago compound, even though Donald Trump was not there at the time.

On Saturday night, April 25, 31-year-old Cole Thomas Allen unsuccessfully attempted to force his way into the White House Correspondents' Association dinner at the Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. And we all saw what happened there.

Earlier this month, in an incident the news cycle quickly forgot, the Secret Service shot a gunman near the National Mall.

And then, yesterday, it was 21-year-old Nasire Best's turn. (One can't help but recall Trump's famous comment on immigration: "they're not sending their best.")

He attempted to shoot his way into the White House compound, but was stopped by Secret Service bullets and later pronounced dead at the hospital. According to reports, Best was known to local police as someone who had repeatedly attempted to breach the White House security perimeter.

What connects all these incidents, other than mental health issues? The perpetrators are all troubled young men, blinded by hatred for Trump and convinced that fate had chosen them, above all others, to assassinate the Commander-in-Chief. No one came as close to success as 20-year-old Matthew Thomas Crooks, who shot Trump in the ear in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024.

For his part, Trump seems to have become accustomed to these various attempts.

Yesterday, on Truth Social, he reiterated his thanks to the Secret Service and local law enforcement for saving his life again.

And, just like last month after the incident at the Correspondents' Dinner, he tried to use the news to support the issue that has now become his obsession: the new $1 billion project to rebuild the White House State Room with maximum security standards.

Trump stated: “This incident comes just one month after the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and demonstrates how important it is, for all future presidents, to have what will be the safest and most secure space of its kind ever built in Washington, D.C. The national security of our country demands it!”

It's not entirely clear how the Best incident justifies the new plans for the White House, which reportedly include modern anti-drone and anti-missile systems. But Trump almost always gets what he wants, and he's right to point to the increasing number of attempts on his life.

America is in a strange state when a gunfight near the White House risks being forgotten very quickly. /Adapted from The Spectator /
