Nikki Haley has managed to defeat former President Donald Trump in the primary elections in the race between Republicans in Washington DC. Haley, a former US ambassador to the UN, won 62.9% of the vote to Trump's 33.2%.
This is her first victory over the former president in the 2024 campaign to become the Republican presidential nominee.
It is seen as a largely symbolic victory, as the capital is a heavily Democratic jurisdiction, with only about 23,000 registered Republicans in the city.
A few days ago, Haley suffered a heavy blow, after losing in South Carolina, her home state. But Haley is the first woman to win a Republican primary in US history.
Trump, however, has a huge lead over Haley and the numbers show he will be the one to face Joe Biden in the November election.
Former White House chief Trump has dominated every primary election so far in the Republican campaign and is poised to win more delegates this week, on Super Tuesday, when voters in 15 states will determine their nominee.
