The UN calls for a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday that attacks by the militant group Hamas in Israel do not justify "collective punishment" of Palestinians and called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Speaking at an economic forum in China, Mr Guterres condemned the October 7 attack by Hamas militants in Israel, in which 1,400 people were killed.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said today that he was horrified by the attack on al-Ahli hospital in Gaza, in which hundreds of people were killed.

" I strongly condemn this attack. I call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to create sufficient opportunities and space to help people who are suffering greatly. Many people's lives are at risk, the whole region is at risk. I hope that the spirit of this meeting will help those who need peace ," said Guterres.

Mr Guterres, who is attending the One Belt One Road initiative meeting in Beijing, called for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" in the war between Israel and the Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip.

He called on Hamas to "unconditionally release the hostages," referring to at least 199 people kidnapped by Palestinian militants during the deadliest attack in Israel's history.

Mr. Guterres also called on Israel to "immediately allow unrestricted access of humanitarian aid to the residents of Gaza who need basic things, most of them women and children"./ VOA
