UN softens draft resolution on Hormuz, removes use of force!
Strait of Hormuz

A new draft of a UN Security Council resolution on security in the Strait of Hormuz no longer includes language authorizing the use of force, in a bid to avoid a potential veto, according to a source from the Gulf region.

The previous version of the draft called for the use of “all necessary defensive measures” to guarantee freedom of navigation and authorized naval intervention in this strategic route. However, it faced opposition from China and Russia, two permanent members of the Security Council.

In the revised version, countries are encouraged to “coordinate efforts of a defensive nature,” without mentioning the use of force, to ensure safe passage through the strait.

The draft also reaffirms navigation rights, calls on Iran to immediately cease attacks on merchant ships, and tasks the UN Secretary-General with reporting on any further incidents.

It also expresses concern about threats to navigation in the Bab al-Mandab Strait in the Red Sea, where Houthi forces, allies of Iran, have previously operated.

The vote on the resolution has been postponed several times and is now expected to take place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Eastern Time, according to the source.
