Britain must train a "citizen army" to be ready to fight in the future, the head of the army has said.
General Patrick Sanders has warned that the increase in reservists "will not be enough".
He emphasized the threat from Russia and called for more to be done to equip Britain's armed forces, the BBC reported.
Patrick did not talk about conscription - where men of war age are required to enlist in the army - but emphasized the call for volunteers if war broke out.
“Our forefathers failed to perceive the implications of the so-called July Crisis in 1914 and plunged into the most ghastly wars. We cannot afford to make the same mistake today. Ukraine really matters," he said.
It is not the first time that he has warned of an increase in the threat of war. He said that Russia's war in Ukraine is not only for territory, but to destroy everyone's system and way of life.
Patrick mentioned the steps Sweden and Finland are taking to put themselves on alert after warning of war.
