The candidacy of the President of the European Council Charles Michel in the 2024 elections is worrying Kiev.
If he is elected Michel will enter the European Parliament in mid-July and EU leaders will have to quickly appoint a successor to his vacant position in the Council.
Since Hungary will take over the Council's next presidency in July, if EU members do not quickly agree on a candidate, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban could take over the role of Council President, the Kyiv Independent reports.
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, will run in the European Parliament elections in June.
It is the first time that a president of the Council will be a candidate in the European parliamentary elections. While Michel's decision is legally favorable, it puts pressure on European leaders.
After holding parliamentary elections on June 6-9 in all 27 EU countries, European leaders are scheduled to meet on June 17 and then again on June 27-28.
