Train collision in Spain, Transport Minister reacts: Strange accident, experts
Train collision in Spain leaves 39 dead

"Extremely strange."

This was stated by the Spanish Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, regarding the railway accident that occurred late Sunday afternoon in Andalusia and that claimed the lives of at least 39 people.

According to the latest figures published by RTVE, more than 150 people were injured, many of them seriously, when the "last carriages" of an Iryo train, which had left Malaga, in Andalusia (south), bound for Madrid, derailed near Adamoth, causing another Renfe train, moving in the opposite direction, to crash into them. The severity of the collision was such that the first carriages of the Renfe train also derailed.

Of the total of 152 injured, five are in critical condition, 24 in serious condition (all hospitalized), while 123 people have injuries of varying severity.

Footage broadcast by Spanish public television shows the two trains and a crowd of people and ambulances surrounding them, as rescue teams struggle to help dozens of victims.

Referring to the possible causes of the accident, the Spanish minister repeatedly stressed that they remain unknown and that their clarification will be undertaken by the railway accident investigation committee.

At the same time, he expressed his surprise at the circumstances in which the tragedy occurred, noting that the Iryo train was "almost new," only four years old.

In addition, he noted that the railway line in question was completely renovated in May 2025, as part of a 700 million euro investment, while the accident site is located on a straight section of the line.

"This is an extremely strange accident; all the technicians and experts are shocked," he said.

According to him, the investigation is estimated to last at least a month, due to the complexity of the case. "The committee is independent and will shed light on the causes, so that we understand exactly what happened," he concluded.
