A leading Russian politician has been mocked by the country's state media after suggesting that women prisoners who become pregnant should be released from prison.
Valery Seleznev, a deputy in Russia's State Duma, proposed the strange measure in an attempt to combat Vladimir Putin's population problem. Russia's population shrank by nearly a million between October 2020 and September 2021.
Seleznev said there are about 45,000 women in Russian prisons, most of whom are serving sentences for minor crimes. " Many of these women are capable of bearing children. The state can offer them some kind of agreement, in which the woman's sentence is suspended and in case she gives birth ," he said.
