Protests erupt in Denmark against Trump: Greenland is not for sale
Protests in Denmark

Hundreds of citizens in Denmark and Greenland have risen up in coordinated protests this weekend, in response to US President Donald Trump's repeated threats to impose American control over the strategic Arctic island.

In Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg and Odense, protesters waved the red and white flag of Greenland, holding banners with clear messages: “Hands off Greenland!” The protests were organized by the Greenlandic association in cooperation with ActionAid Denmark, and were deliberately held during the visit of a bipartisan delegation of US senators to Copenhagen.

Camilla Siezing, chairwoman of the Joint Inuit Association, stressed that “we protest against American statements and ambitions to annex Greenland. We demand respect for the Danish Kingdom and for Greenland’s right to self-determination. We hope to show that there are many of us who support this position.” Another protest was also held in the Greenlandic capital, Nuuk, where a protester sent a blunt message to the US president: “We are not for sale!”

The crisis began after Trump threatened that “any option other than American control over Greenland is unacceptable,” considering the territory essential to US national security and to strengthening NATO’s position in the Arctic. This rhetoric has significantly worsened the diplomatic climate between Washington and Copenhagen, also provoking harsh reactions from European NATO members.

To calm the situation, a delegation of US senators arrived in Copenhagen for meetings with Danish and Greenlandic leaders. At a press conference, Democratic Senator Chris Coons acknowledged that “the pace of statements by the Trump administration has not been constructive.” He expressed respect for the indigenous people of Greenland, praising their ability to build a sustainable life in an extreme environment. The US delegation also visited a military cemetery to lay a wreath in honor of Danish soldiers who have fought alongside the US in international conflicts, including Afghanistan.

Trump’s ambitions for Greenland reveal not only a new neocolonial American approach to strategic territories, but also a disregard for international law and the sovereignty of indigenous peoples. The attempt to purchase or annex Greenland has been seen as an aggressive escalation of US policy in the Arctic, which is linked to energy, climate and military interests. For now, the civil and diplomatic response in Denmark and Greenland has been strong and dignified. But the growing tension shows that the fight for the Arctic has only just begun – and indigenous peoples are the first to be affected by this new global race for territory and power.
