The "Maduro" precedent and the danger of Trump's unlimited power!
Maduro and Trump

Maduro's arrest in the middle of the night is a blatant demonstration of Donald Trump's power.

Expressions of unlimited power come no more directly than kidnapping a sitting president from his capital in the middle of the night.

President Donald Trump has shown with a 74-word social media post that he can act decisively, unexpectedly, and perhaps recklessly, in pursuit of his diverse and shifting foreign policy objectives, without much regard for precedent, consequences, or even international law.

The operation to take Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife from their fortified compound in Caracas to face the US judicial system follows a predictable but extreme pattern for what the US calls a fugitive, with a $50 million bounty on his head.

But there is a serious exception here: Maduro is a head of state whose country is prey to various ongoing US political objectives. No matter what the indictments say, this will always feel political.

Historical background and American motives

Successive White House administrations have wanted to remove Venezuela's leftist, autocratic, and sometimes violent regime, whether for the fight against drug trafficking, for their oil, or for regional rapprochement.

Trump's second term promoted the end of Maduro's role as the head of a vast regional drug trafficking ring as the main justification. But they ran into a paradox when they suggested that Maduro simply leave power: He cannot be both the head of the ring and someone who can be removed from his role in the blink of an eye.

The evidence that Maduro was at the top of the regional tree was not as strong as the White House had hoped. Yes, Venezuela certainly allowed drug trafficking from its airspace and coast, with Colombia, the world's largest cocaine producer.

The Mexican and Colombian cartels were larger players, but seemed to attract less American military focus.

Geopolitical ambitions

Deep at the heart of this action lie Washington's broader ambitions for greater control over its "back yard", for what they have called a new 'Monroe Doctrine'.

A compliant Venezuela is better for American hydrocarbon markets, but more importantly it provides a place where millions of Venezuelans currently seeking refuge in the United States can return.

Consequences and uncertain future

But as it stands, what comes next is unclear, whether there is an immediate successor willing to take the same risk of kidnapping. It remains to be seen whether this ignites anti-American anger, or turns into a day of celebrations for the end of a dictatorship that has mismanaged Venezuela's plummeting economy.

Maduro's removal is a victory for Trump, but the chaos or collapse that follows would be a free-flowing defeat.

The plan for "what comes next" is more important than the stunning display of American power over the skies of Caracas early Saturday morning. / Taken from "CNN", adapted by "Pamphlet"
